The inspiration for Black Dog Offroad began after we rescued Cooper, our black German Shepherd Dog. We saw first hand just how often large black dogs are abandoned by their owners and how quickly their lives can turn upside down. Wanting to do more, we started donating to local rescues and doing 5k races to bring awareness, but it never felt like enough until in the Summer of 2015 a lightbulb went off.
Every year we participate in the SPCA Strut Your Mutt event with Cooper and this particular year was different than the rest. It had POURED down rain the days leading up to the event so when we got there, they asked us (since we were in our Jeep) to park in the grass so the “normal” vehicles could use the parking lot. Hoping and praying I would get to use my winch to pull someone out of the mud like any good Jeep owner, we obviously obliged.
Once we finished up the race, we headed back to our Wrangler and it was then that we saw the hundreds of Jeeps lined up on the grass and it occurred to me – how many Jeep Wrangler owners do you know that do NOT have a dog? I am guessing the answer is not many? Wanting to do more to help rescue dogs, Black Dog Offroad was born, I quit my day job, and Cooper was quickly promoted to CBO (although he still argues he should be CEO from time to time.)
