Meet Cooper, our Chief Barking Officer. He is our German Shepherd Dog that we rescued in 2013 and is the heart and soul of Black Dog Offroad. He is the CBO and the center of our lives whether we admit it or not!
My wife and I were on the hunt for a rescue GSD. I had always wanted a GSD and my wife wanted a loyal K9 to take on adventures, spoil beyond words, and guard our home. After a few months of research and striking out with some local rescue groups, we decided to go visit a large GSD named Jaggar at the DFW German Shepherd Rescue Ranch here in north Texas. Little did we know that upon arriving, we would first see our Cooper laying in the dirt, under the truck, trying to stay cool in the Texas heat and playing aloof, not to be bothered by the mayhem all around him of the GSDs running around trying to get our attention. We decided his laid back demeanor would fit our lifestyle perfectly, so we brought him home then and there.
When he was not refusing to get off our couch or ignoring our every command, he was pulling my wife to the ground on walks to chase after the neighborhood cats and squirrels. He was treating us like a temporary stop on his journey and our trainer (luckily) told us to stick the course and everything would soon change. I wanted to give him back, I convinced myself I did not want a dog and that he did not want to be here anyways. If it were not for my wife refusing to back down, we probably would have – it would have been the easy thing to do, the easy way out. I even considered getting a (gasp) puppy!
Our trainer was right. Boy was he right. Cooper realized that this is and forever will be his forever home. I realized that I would do anything to make him happy. His checkered past of being abandoned, living on the streets of Dallas, scrounging for food scraps, and going from shelter to shelter for months not being adopted because he is “scary” was now over. He became my shadow and my co-pilot on adventures. I never thought I would be one of “those people” who consider their dogs like family, but it became true on so many levels. He is our fur child. He isn’t perfect, but neither am I. He is loyal to a fault, gets hurt CONSTANTLY chasing squirrels, and if there is an important phone call to be made, he will decide that is the one time of the day to defend the house from a world of intruders with a deafening bark. He is unapologetically Cooper and we love him for it.
Going on this journey together, above all else, Cooper has taught me what it means to fully live in the moment. Whether it is losing your absolute mind when it is time for a Jeep Ride, napping on his chair in the office, or sprinting all around the house because it is time for your favorite meal of the day - dinner, we can all learn to not take the little things for granted. He has taught me that sometimes the best thing in life is to grab your best friend and go on adventure. He is the CBO and the face of the company (sometimes he argues he should be the CEO). He is the silhouette in our logo. He is the reason we include complementary dog hair with every order. He is Cooper, our Chief Barking Officer.
